But following the mostly-negative response to season two, Pizzolatto took a longer break. For a brief period, it appeared a third season might not happen at all.
When it did eventually materialise, almost four years had passed since season two had aired. So depending on both HBO and Pizzolatto's willingness to continue, a fourth season could air as early as or as late as or later!
Pizzolatto has said, however, that he's " looking to do another series, maybe a movie " ahead of returning to True Detective , so a longer wait seems likely.
Pizzolatto has revealed that he already has "an idea" for a fourth season of True Detective. I just had a lead character who's 35, 45 and 70 all at the same time and this mystery that has to reach false resolutions and keep going into the future without cheating the audience and all these complicated structural elements.
I think it needs to percolate for a while. The first and third seasons both unfolded their complicated narratives across multiple timelines, while the second took a more straightforward approach to storytelling.
Given the respective responses each has received, might Pizzolatto be tempted to give us another chronologically complex tale? And if the fourth season does bring back old characters, where might we pick up with them?
The first season ended with an older Marty and Rust reflecting on the ongoing universal battle between light and dark, with the latter having found new purpose in life following a near-death experience and having finally solved the murder case that'd been plaguing the partners for almost two decades.
Of the second season's main cast, only Rachel McAdams' Ani survived, disappearing to lead a new life with Frank Semyon's widow Jordan Kelly Reilly , while the fate of the third season's lead characters is, of course, yet to be revealed.
It's not even been greenlit yet, so it'll be a long while before we get any promotional material for True Detective season four.

Meanwhile, Maggie sets Cohle up with a friend; and old case files reveal a connection to a woman who drowned years ago. Cohle revisits a dark chapter of his past to track down a possible link to prime suspect Reggie Ledoux, but he needs to make sure a distracted Hart has his head in the game.
The spoils of a solved case are shared by Hart and Cohle; troubling new intelligence is revealed by Papania and Gilbough.

Hart and Cohle call a truce to investigate a series of disappearances that may be related to the Dora Lange murder and the Tuttle family. Season 1 ends with Hart and Cohle finding a new lead in their year-old case thanks to a detail that was overlooked.
It's about whether our lives really matter at all. That's scarier than the scariest monster. McConaughey and Harrelson don't just fill out these characters, they disappear into them, delivering two of the best performances you'll see in TV or film this entire year.
It's a winner. But it's also an oddball, and a weirdo, and an interesting-cum-strange companion, and someone - um, something - you won't mind spending time with.
