Terah's Descendants 27 This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.
But when they arrived in Haran, they settled there. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. When they came to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram traveled through the land to the site of the oak b of Moreh at Shechem.
And at that time the Canaanites were in the land. Abram and Sarai in Egypt 10 Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.
Why did you not tell me she was your wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go! At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land.
After all, we are brothers. Now separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.
And Abram and Lot parted company. Lot Seized by the Four Kings 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some men fell into the pits, but the survivors fled to the hill country.
Now Abram was living near the oaks c of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshcol and Aner, all of whom were bound by treaty to Abram.
They may take their portion. I am your shield, your very great reward. The birds, however, he did not cut. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.
But when Hagar realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt.
May the LORD judge between you and me. Do whatever you want with her. My covenant in your flesh will be an everlasting covenant. I will bless her, and she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will descend from her.
Can Sarah give birth at the age of ninety? He will become the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
After that, you may continue on your way. Prepare three seahs b of fine flour, knead it, and bake some bread. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and Sarah will have a son. Because their sin is so grievous, 21 I will go down to see if their actions fully justify the outcry that has reached Me.
If not, I will find out. Will You really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there?
Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right? Will you destroy the whole city for the lack of five?
Suppose thirty are found there? Suppose ten are found there? Lot Welcomes the Angels 1 The two angels entered Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city.
Then you can rise early and go on your way. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!
Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them whatever you want. But do not do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.
Now we will treat you worse than them. Get them out of here, 13 because we are about to destroy this place. Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.
Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!
But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die. Please let me flee there—is it not a small place?
Then my life will be saved. Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it. Lot and His Daughters 30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains—for he was afraid to stay in Zoar—where they lived in a cave.
That is why I did not let you touch her. But if you do not restore her, be aware that you will surely die—you and all who belong to you.
How have I sinned against you, that you have brought such tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done.
They will kill me on account of my wife. Settle wherever you please. Yet I have borne him a son in his old age. Listen to everything that Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
She left and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until today.
Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will show you. He split wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood.
So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.
And Abraham settled in Beersheba. Give me a burial site among you so that I can bury my dead. Bury your dead in the finest of our tombs.
None of us will withhold his tomb for burying your dead. Let him sell it to me in your presence for full price, so that I may have a burial site.
Listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people.
Bury your dead. Accept it from me, so that I may bury my dead there. The land is worth four hundred shekels b of silver, but what is that between you and me?
Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came? Only do not take my son back there.
By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up again. I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.
Straw and feed were brought to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of his companions. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, camels and donkeys.
He also gave precious gifts to her brother and her mother. After that, she may go. Send me on my way so that I may go to my master.
May your offspring possess the gates of their enemies. So the servant took Rebekah and left. So she took her veil and covered herself.
And the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites, and the Leummites. All these were descendants of Keturah. The Death of Abraham 7 Abraham lived a total of years.
Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah. Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people. And they lived in hostility toward all their brothers.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram a and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
Esau Sells His Birthright 29 One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished.
So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright. Thus Esau despised his birthright. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines at Gerar.
Settle in the land where I tell you. For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring, and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.
And the LORD blessed him, 13 and he became richer and richer, until he was exceedingly wealthy. And he gave these wells the same names his father had given them.
Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham. Let us make a covenant with you 29 that you will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you, and we have done nothing but good to you, sending you on your way in peace.
And now you are blessed by the LORD. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him in peace. Then I would be revealed to him as a deceiver, and I would bring upon myself a curse rather than a blessing.
Just obey my voice and go get them for me. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may bless me.
Are you really my son Esau or not? May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed. Before you came in, I ate it all and blessed him—and indeed, he will be blessed!
He took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing. What is left that I can do for you, my son? Bless me too, O my father!
But when you rebel, you will tear his yoke from your neck. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?
And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.
All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.
This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven! He poured oil on top of it, 19 and he called that place Bethel, d though previously the city had been named Luz.
Jacob Meets Rachel 1 Jacob resumed his journey and came to the land of the sons of the east. And a large stone covered the mouth of the well.
Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.
Then we will water the sheep. Then he took him to his home, and Jacob told him all that had happened.
Tell me what your wages should be. Stay here with me. Why have you deceived me? So he worked for Laban another seven years.
Surely my husband will love me now. Dan and Naphtali 1 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing any children for Jacob, she envied her sister.
Sleep with her, and she will bear children for me, a so that through her I too can build a family. He listened to her and opened her womb, 23 and she conceived and gave birth to a son.
You know how hard I have worked for you. I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you.
But now, when may I also provide for my own household? These will be my wages. If I have any goats that are not speckled or spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered stolen.
So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.
So the weaker animals went to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.
Now get up and leave this land at once, and return to your native land. Not only has he sold us, but he has certainly squandered the money paid for us.
So do whatever God has told you. You have deceived me and carried off my daughters like captives of war! I would have sent you away with joy and singing, with tambourines and harps.
Now you have done a foolish thing. But why have you stolen my gods? In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself if anything is yours, and take it back.
And Laban searched everything in the tent but found nothing. Have you found anything that belongs to you? Put it here before my brothers and yours, that they may judge between the two of us.
Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flock. And you demanded payment from me for what was stolen by day or night.
But God has seen my affliction and the toil of my hands, and last night He rendered judgment. Everything you see is mine!
Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine or the children they have borne? And after they had eaten, they spent the night on the mountain.
Then he left to return home. Jacob's Fear of Esau 1 Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
I have sent this message to inform my master, so that I may find favor in your sight. Indeed, with only my staff I came across the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.
They are a gift, sent to my lord Esau. And behold, Jacob is behind us. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.
Jacob Wrestles with God 22 During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of Jabbok.
And He blessed Jacob there. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants. And they both wept.
If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me favorably.
So Jacob pressed him until he accepted. If they are driven hard for even a day, all the animals will die. I will continue on slowly, at a comfortable pace for the livestock and children, until I come to my lord at Seir.
Let me find favor in the sight of my lord. Jacob Settles in Shechem 18 After Jacob had come from Paddan-aram, b he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped just outside the city.
He loved the young girl and spoke to her tenderly. Please give her to him as his wife. Live here, move about freely, and acquire your own property.
Only give me the girl as my wife! We will dwell among you and become one people. Let them live and trade in our land; indeed, it is large enough for them.
Let us take their daughters in marriage and give our daughters to them. Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell among us. We are few in number; if they unite against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.
Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau. Purify yourselves and change your garments. I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in my day of distress.
He has been with me wherever I have gone. So Jacob named it Allon-bachuth. A nation—even a company of nations—shall come from you, and kings shall descend from you.
These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan-aram. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. Esau's Descendants 1 This is the account of Esau that is, Edom.
These were the sons of Esau, who were born to him in the land of Canaan. They are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom, and they are the grandsons of Adah.
This was Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness as he was pasturing the donkeys of his father Zibeon.
The Kings of Edom 31 These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the Israelites: 32 Bela son of Beor ruled in Edom; the name of his city was Dinhabah.
And the name of his city was Avith. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements in the land they possessed.
Esau was the father of the Edomites. Joseph's Dreams 1 Now Jacob lived in the land where his father had resided, the land of Canaan.
The presumed documents, allegedly dating from the tenth to the fifth centuries b. Each of these documents is claimed to have its own characteristics and its own theology, which often contradicts that of the other documents.
The Pentateuch is thus depicted as a patchwork of stories, poems and laws. However, this view is not supported by conclusive evidence, and intensive archaeological and literary research has tended to undercut many of the arguments used to challenge Mosaic authorship.
Genesis speaks of beginnings -- of the heavens and the earth, of light and darkness, of seas and skies, of land and vegetation, of sun and moon and stars, of sea and air and land animals, of human beings made in God's own image, the climax of his creative activity , of marriage and family, of society and civilization, of sin and redemption.
The list could go on and on. A key word in Genesis is "account," which also serves to divide the book into its ten major parts see Literary Features and Literary Outline and which includes such concepts as birth, genealogy and history.
The book of Genesis is foundational to the understanding of the rest of the Bible. Its message is rich and complex, and listing its main elements gives a succinct outline of the Biblical message as a whole.
It is supremely a book that speaks about relationships, highlighting those between God and his creation, between God and humankind, and between human beings.
It is thoroughly monotheistic, taking for granted that there is only one God worthy of the name and opposing the ideas that there are many gods polytheism , that there is no god at all atheism and that everything is divine pantheism.
It clearly teaches that the one true God is sovereign over all that exists i. It introduces us to the way in which God initiates and makes covenants with his chosen people, pledging his love and faithfulness to them and calling them to promise theirs to him.
It establishes sacrifice as the substitution of life for life ch. It gives us the first hint of God's provision for redemption from the forces of evil compare with Ro and contains the oldest and most profound statement concerning the significance of faith ; see note there.
More than half of Heb 11 -- a NT list of the faithful -- refers to characters in Genesis. The message of a book is often enhanced by its literary structure and characteristics.
Genesis is divided into ten main sections, each beginning with the word "account" see ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; -- repeated for emphasis at -- and The first five sections can be grouped together and, along with the introduction to the book as a whole -- , can be appropriately called "primeval history" -- This introduction to the main story sketches the period from Adam to Abraham and tells about the ways of God with the human race as a whole.
The last five sections constitute a much longer but equally unified account, and relate the story of God's dealings with the ancestors of his chosen people Israel Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph and their families -- a section often called "patriarchal history" -- This section is in turn composed of three narrative cycles Abraham-Isaac, -- ; Isaac-Jacob, -- ; ; Jacob-Joseph, -- , interspersed by the genealogies of Ishmael and Esau ch.
Such emphasis on divinely chosen men and their families is perhaps the most obvious literary and theological characteristic of the book of Genesis as a whole.
It strikingly underscores the fact that the people of God are not the product of natural human developments, but are the result of God's sovereign and gracious intrusion in human history.
He brings out of the fallen human race a new humanity consecrated to himself, called and destined to be the people of his kingdom and the channel of his blessing to the whole earth.
Numbers with symbolic significance figure prominently in Genesis. The number ten, in addition to being the number of sections into which Genesis is divided, is also the number of names appearing in the genealogies of chs.
The number seven also occurs frequently. The Hebrew text of consists of exactly seven words and that of of exactly 14 twice seven.
There are seven days of creation, seven names in the genealogy of ch. Other significant numbers, such as 12 and 40, are used with similar frequency.
The book of Genesis is basically prose narrative, punctuated here and there by brief poems the longest is the so-called Blessing of Jacob in Much of the prose has a lyrical quality and uses the full range of figures of speech and other devices that characterize the world's finest epic literature.
Vertical and horizontal parallelism between the two sets of three days in the creation account see note on ; the ebb and flow of sin and judgment in ch.
It is no coincidence that many of the subjects and themes of the first three chapters of Genesis are reflected in the last three chapters of Revelation.
We can only marvel at the superintending influence of the Lord himself, who assures us that "all Scripture is God-breathed" 2Ti and that the men who wrote it "spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" 2Pe All rights reserved.

Get ready; I am sending you to them. We can say that a vicious animal has devoured him. Then we shall see what becomes of his dreams!
Throw him into this pit in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him. Now the pit was empty, with no water in it. Their camels were carrying spices, balm, and myrrh on their way down to Egypt.
What am I going to do? A vicious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces! Judah and Tamar 1 Chronicles 1 About that time, Judah left his brothers and settled near a man named Hirah, an Adullamite.
Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and raise up offspring for your brother. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah.
For she saw that although Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you could not find her.
Whose seal and cord and staff are these? The Birth of Perez and Zerah 27 When the time came for Tamar to give birth, there were twins in her womb.
Joseph and Potiphar's Wife 1 Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife.
So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God? Joseph Falsely Imprisoned 13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.
He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I screamed as loud as I could. Tell me your dreams. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes.
Then the birds will eat the flesh of your body. Then Pharaoh woke up, 5 but he fell back asleep and dreamed a second time: Seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, came up on one stalk.
Then Pharaoh awoke and realized it was a dream. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
We told him our dreams and he interpreted them for us individually. After he had shaved and changed his clothes, he went in before Pharaoh.
But I have received word about you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it. I have never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt!
Then I awoke. I told this dream to the magicians, but no one could explain it to me. God has revealed to Pharaoh what He is about to do. The dreams have the same meaning.
Then all the abundance in the land of Egypt will be forgotten and the famine will devastate the land. Then the country will not perish in the famine.
Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you. And Joseph took charge over all the land of Egypt. In every city he laid up the food from the fields around it.
And although there was famine in every country, there was food throughout the land of Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.
So when his brothers arrived, they bowed down before him with their faces to the ground. You have come to see if our land is vulnerable.
Your servants are honest men, not spies. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!
We saw his anguish when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us. But you would not listen.
Now we must account for his blood! When he turned back and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and had him bound before their eyes.
This order was carried out, 26 and they loaded the grain on their donkeys and departed. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.
Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade in the land. And when they and their father saw the bags of money, they were dismayed.
Joseph is gone and Simeon is no more. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is happening against me! Put him in my care, and I will return him.
If any harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hairs down to Sheol in sorrow. Do you have another brother?
You may hold me personally responsible! If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then let me bear the guilt before you all my life.
Perhaps it was a mistake. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved. They made their way down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for they shall dine with me at noon. It was the full amount of our money, and we have brought it back with us.
We do not know who put our money in our sacks. Your God, the God of your father, gave you the treasure that was in your sacks.
Buch Mose selbst nennt keinen Autor.
