Instead it was a fun, wholesome journey with charming characters and awesome monster effects that are on par with Evil Dead - some even more impressive and grotesque!
Gotta love finding a gem like this you had no clue existed. One of those movies that is just really entertaining at its core. Yin is such a cool character and every moment with him is delightful and exciting.
A masterpiece of horror fantasy, it's got a similar energy to Evil Dead 2 but with a big dose of romance and melodrama in the best way. It's spooky, its funny, its thrilling, the visuals are gorgeous and the practical effects are extremely rad.

As far as I can tell, they've cut at least an half hour out of the movie. What's missing is four or five scenes that you really need to see to make sense out of the plot.
I'm particularly incensed because this movie has two of my three favorite scenes from Hong Kong cinema. Very early on there's a rather gross scene that explicitly shows how the ghost kills her victims when she's seducing them.
She sticks her extendable tongue a leitmotif that the movie will come back to later with the demon master down the victim's throat and into his stomach, and rips his organs out one by one.
The whole time this is going on the point of view of the camera is from the tip of the ghosts tongue, so you get a tour of the victim's internal anatomy.
This scene is a bit over done, but is important to make sense out of the next scene that they cut. Early on the ghost is falling in love with the tax collector, and they start making out.
The ghost gets so carried away that she starts to forget herself, and you see her tongue rushing past the tax collector's uvula and tonsils and diving down his throat.
It goes down to the general vicinity of the gall bladder and pancreas, twitches at them before ripping them out, and at that moment she realizes what she is doing, brings herself under control, and pulls her tongue back into her mouth.
The camera then switches to a view of the two lovers: he gives her a long, dreamy-eyed look, and says "Oh, kiss me again, but please don't stick your tongue in my stomach" There's a short but important conversation between the Demon lord and the King of Hell that's been cut out.
There's also a character who's entirely missing from the current version. When the swordsman and the tax collector realize they need to go down to Hell to rescue the ghost, they aren't sure how or when they're supposed to get there.
They go and consult a shaman who casts oracle bones, then looks up and says "Oh! It's an auspicious day in Hell! Later in the film, when they get back from hell, they jump back into the shaman's hut.
This movie is an absolute classic, and the current version as presented on Amazon totally butchers it. The original would have gotten five stars -- I gave this version two stars instead of one because there's enough of the original left that you can sort of see what is happening.
