Unlike the first film, which is primarily about the journey of one ape, Caesar, living among humans, this film is about the uneasy coexistence of two societies, ape and man, that degrades into an all-out war.
The movie starts out slow, with glimpses of the ape society living in the Redwood forest outside of the Bay Area of California. Then comes a violent encounter with a group of humans that slowly escalates the violent tendencies in both the human and ape society.
The rest of the movie is a series of character studies, looking at how the proponents of peace counter the proponents of war in both the human and ape societies.
The film ends with Caesar barely holding onto power among the apes, and foreshadows the third movie as about all-out war.
My favorite film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series. This is close to a perfect movie. Andy Serkis' work as Caesar is unreal, with the apes standing front and center as the main characters.
The CG lends a credibility to these characters that surpasses the believability of the original films' costumes and masks. The only weak participant in the film is Jason Clarke as Malcolm.
While every other actor is turning in phenomenal performances, he's just I don't know, his acting skills are put to shame by his co-stars.
Luckily, the apes matter much more in the film, and it pays off. This is a fantastic piece of work that I recommend to anyone.
It's the best in the trilogy and deserves respect as a piece of cinema. I still love the original from , it had the best twist I'd ever seen, and it's still a great movie, but I didn't feel for the characters as much as I did in Dawn.
It's truly amazing. BG Boyd. I put off watching this for a long time because I felt it would be too heavy. That ended up being true but I do not regret watching it.
By heavy, I mean like Gladiator, a pretty intense movie that is very well done but takes its toll on you because it is so well done.
By contrast a light movie would be something like transformers, where you just go to see stuff blow up and don't care about any of the characters or if any of them die.
Rise was a good slower-paced lead-in to this movie. Dawn picks up two years after that with the apes minding their own business in the woods just north of San Francisco.
Caesar is leading a rather large band of apes and they have their own little village with baby apes and everything. They say they haven't seen humans in a while and wonder if they are all just gone.
Of course, in the next scene, a band of humans stumble upon them and want to just take what they need. They still view the apes as "animals" and some even blame them for the "Simian Flue" that all but wiped out humanity.
One human thinks that just going in and killing a village of sentient beings isn't really a cool thing to do.
Despite his and Caesar's best attempts to keep things civil, conflict ensues due to butt-heads on both sides. Caesar is an amazing character played by amazing mo-cap actor Andy Serkis.
How Serkis and Reeves can convey exactly how powerful strong, compassionate, and intelligent a being he is, while hardly talking is just awesome.
Side note, I just saw War last night and I cannot praise the people enough that were involved in these movies. While Rise was a fine movie, I really think that Matt Reeves really raised the bar with his two sequels.

After an incident close to the Apes compound and brief meeting between Man and Ape, 'Caesar' who understands human-kind warns 'Malcolm' Jason Clarke and his team to stay away from the forest where he and his followers live.
There is an element of the Apes that crave war against their once captors, only the logic of their leader prevents it.
The people living within the city boundary's have become desperate, they have little or no power-source, in the forest there is a 'dam' which could generate the power they need, but will 'Caesar' permit a human presence close by.
Meanwhile back at the Dam 'Caesar' watches over the human teams progress, however because of the action taken by 'Koba' trust is wearing thin, the prospect of war becomes even closer.
This is a sprawling and exciting epic that lays the grounding for what is yet to come, the film will draw you in from the outset, with some terrific action sequences and an underlying will from both 'Caesar' and 'Malcolm' to maintain the peace between them.
So the Apes franchise goes from strength to strength - this is another cracking instalment on the journey to the world that Chuck Heston rocked up in all those years ago.
Picking up from the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the opening credits sequence here hits the fast forward button. In a blur, we're shown the Earth and human populace being overtaken by a deadly virus.
As the film proper begins, Caesar and his ever evolving troupe of apes have set up a community in the woods while a small pocket of human survivors are holed up nearby in what remains of San Francisco.
They're lacking power, food etc and need to turn to Caesar for assistance in the form of an uneasy truce. Can the apes and humans peacefully co-exist?
What do you think? Knowing where it all has to end up eventually brings a sense of inevitability which creates its own air of dread and tension.
The fun of these films is in the details, we know where we're going but we're never sure exactly how we'll get there. A slow burn first half gives way to an extended, explosive endgame and it's certainly worth the wait.
The CGI is fantastic of course and these ape characters are exactly that - characters. They live, they breathe, they each have their own individual personalities and great credit must go to Andy Serkis and his crew as always.
On the human side - Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman and others more than hold their own, bringing their own heart and weight to proceedings.
I'm coming from a place of bias as a fan of almost all of the films in this series I'm looking at you Tim Burton but this comes highly recommended.

This is the 2nd and there are 3. Like it goes down. The emotions are real, and of course I rooted for the apes over the humans. I actually saw this film in the cinema when it came out and knew I had to get it on dvd when it was out, I cried in the cinema and I cry every time I watch it.
Just as good as the first one and now I have this I will recommend it to all, The Apes do there bit very well actually better than the humans.
Swinging from tree to tree and living as we do really marvellous, The story is fabulous with the cast you just can't go wrong. Different and yet carries on from the last one and that puts that in for an A grade plus maybe another one in the making who knows.
Action and suspense is fantastic making you stay put and not moving a muscle, always on the move something exploding all around here and there specially when they attack the humans yes we have a naughty monkey in the show that stirs up trouble, wonder why?
Okay no more hints gather up the movie collect the popcorn as it's not a movie unless we have our popcorn as we all know, put your feet up and relax, well try to anyway to a brilliant night in with fabulous entertainment worth waiting for.
Mankind has all but been wiped out by a Virus and only a handful of survivors are left. This particular group are trying to get to a Hydro-Electric Plant so they can generate electricity.
However, they hadn't reckoned on being attacked by Apes led by the redoubtable Caesar. There is an uneasy truce but another Ape Chimpanzee , hates humans and plots to de-throne Caesar, take his place and kill all the remaining humans.
I particularly liked the scene where Caesar's partner gives birth and you see the softer side of him. A stupendous film and well worth buying.
