It has the unsurpassable merit of its main character, Muhammad Ali, who is both one of the most serious people in the world and one of the funniest.
Richard Brody. Smith packed on the pounds, unleashed some great boxing moves, and displayed a level of emotional pull that compelled audiences to see him as The Greatest.
Wilson Morales. I respect it enormously, but it feels like an art film in search of a movie. Mann recognizes the importance of Ali as an entertainer, but he's in danger of forgetting how to be one himself.
David Ansen. Mann's compelling account of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali captures the considerable impact and charisma of the man who literally punched his way into the American consciousness.
Danny Graydon. Ali is a far more complex creature than this movie allows for. Peter Rainer. It is well-intentioned, sketchy, sprawling and unremarkable.
At two hours and 38 minutes, it is also long-winded and exhausting. Rex Reed. Kaleem Aftab. Will Smith takes the wise and sensible option of not trying to impersonate Ali per se, but rather tonally build an impression of Ali from his own natural register.
PJ Nabarro. A flawed film, then, and a comparative disappointment. But because of Smith, the scrupulous recreation of the period and the general quality of the performances, I'll score Ali a narrow victory on points.
Pat Stacey. While making a great looking biopic that is filled with detail, Michal Mann forgot to make a film that entertains, creating an emotionally void, tone flat portrait of an athlete whose contribution socially and culturally has yet to be matched.
Matthew Pejkovic. You can almost see him thinking his way through his fights Sean Axmaker. Nell Minow.

That was a significant re-edit. It happens to move better and it's longer. It's more complete and moves better. Much more dramatic. Was this review helpful to you?

To his credit, he sets out to prove that with his highly agile and forceful style soon making him a formidable boxer who soon claims the heavyweight championship.
His personal life is no less noteworthy with his allegiance to the Nation of Islam, his friendship with the controversial Malcolm X and his abandonment of his slave name in favor of Muhammad Ali stirring up controversy.
Yet, at the top of his game, both Ali's personal and professional lives face the ultimate test with the military draft rules are changed, making him eligible for military induction during the Vietnam War.
Despite the fact that he could easily agree to a sweetheart deal that would have meant an easy tour of Written by Kenneth Chisholm kchishol rogers.
Muhammad Ali is a heroic character with legendary wit, humanity, and boxing skill. Always a fighter and always a lover, Ali's life is a subtle and clever story of dignity, strength, and compassion.
And Ali himself wrote that story. This film profoundly reminds me of an autobiography Ali wrote several years ago with the help of a friend.
Never afraid to do what needed to be done to get where he wanted to go, Ali was never a stranger to controversy, flambuoyance, acid wit, and an outspoken promotion of truth - even when most of his own fans couldn't see it.
This film captures the champ's many battles, not the least of which are the internal battles he wages with himself over politics, his ego, money and his own destructive patterns in relationships with women.
But thankfully, it does so in a respectful way which does not compromise the man's heroism, nor does it spare the audience of the laughter, mischief and joy Ali became so well known for.
Michael Mann's film has relatively little boxing in it, and is in no way a chronicle of Ali's career. This film is about how and why Ali is who he is, and how he drove himself and everybody around him to reach phenomenal heights.
It features the beginnings of Ali's career and follows him through the most difficult part of his career, when he fought the US government over the Viet Nam war, fought his own religious establishment over his outspokenness, and even fought against hypocritical promoters he relied on who were bent on exploiting the third world.
Too intelligent to just be a prize fighter, too passionate to just shut up, and too faithful to give up his religion when it gave up on him, Ali just kept on driving.
The film ends after Ali's fight against George Foreman in , so it does not cover his entire career, and does not discuss his more recent activities.
His life since retiring from boxing is equally interesting, in my opinion, but since Mann wanted to depict the most dramatic and challenging aspects of the Ali legend, I can't blame him for his choice of time frame.
The cast is very strong. Will Smith gives a fine performance wonderfully recasting Ali's wonderful facial expressions, gestures, physical style and speech pattern, Jamie Foxx, Ron Silver and Mario Van Peebles are all excellent in their supporting roles.
And the boxers are all very believable. They even look like the people they play. Smith doesn't really look anything like Ali, and you are occasionally aware mainly through Smith's imitation of the greatest's very unique speech that you are watching an imitation, but this does not in any way detract from the film.
Highly recommended for those interested in real-life drama and heroism, the civil rights movement in the s and s, and the intelligent and political side of American sports.
NOT recommended for fans of boxing movies and action films. This is a slow moving, intense drama and neither a feel-good film nor a slug-fest.

Company Credits. Technical Specs. For a good portion of the fight against Foreman, Ali leans back against the ropes, allowing Foreman to tire himself out.
Then he knocks out the tired Foreman, regaining the Heavyweight Championship. The project began in when producer Paul Ardaji optioned the movie rights to Muhammad Ali's life story.
In , Ardaji had visited Ali on his 50th birthday and persuaded him to allow a film to be made about his life.
Producer Jon Peters started developing the film in Howard's draft focused on Ali's life from 12 to 40 years old, and his relationship with his father.
Rivele and Chris Wilkinson , and by the biopic was set up at Columbia Pictures , with Will Smith attached to star and the possibility of Ron Howard directing.
Columbia was hoping for filming to start towards the end of , [8] but it was pushed back, and Sonnenfeld exited in November It was speculated the Columbia was hesitant to move forward with Sonnenfeld following the disappointing box office performance of Wild Wild West.
With this commitment to Ali , Mann turned down the opportunity to direct early versions of The Aviator , Shooter and Savages , [10] and brought Eric Roth to co-write the script.
Smith spent about one year learning about Ali's life. These included boxing training up to seven hours a day , Islamic studies with Wiljah Akbar and dialect training.
Smith has said that his portrayal of Ali is his proudest work to date. One of the selling points of the film is the realism of the fight scenes.
Smith worked alongside boxing promoter Guy Sharpe from SharpeShooter Entertainment, and his lead fighter Ross Kent, to get the majority of his boxing tips for the film.
All of the boxers in the film are former or current world heavyweight championship caliber boxers. It was quickly decided that 'Hollywood fighting'—passing the fist or foot between the camera and the face to create the illusion of a hit—would not be used in favor of actual boxing.
The only limitation placed upon the fighters was for Charles Shufford who plays George Foreman. He was permitted to hit Smith as hard as he could, so long as he did not actually knock the actor out.
Smith had to gain weight to look the part of Muhammad Ali. The site's critics consensus: "Though perhaps no film could fully do justice to the fascinating life and personality of Muhammad Ali, Mann's direction and Smith's performance combine to pack a solid punch.
Roger Ebert derided the film with two stars in his review for the Chicago Sun-Times , and mentioned, "it lacks much of the flash, fire and humor of Muhammad Ali and is shot more in the tone of a eulogy than a celebration".
The documentaries a. Cassius Clay and the Oscar-winning When We Were Kings cover a lot of the same ground and are consistently more engaging".
In The New York Times , Elvis Mitchell proclaimed Ali to be a "breakthrough" film for Mann, adding that it was his "first movie with feeling" and that "his overwhelming love of its subject will turn audiences into exuberant, thrilled fight crowds".
Hoberman , in his review for the Village Voice , felt that the "first half percolates wonderfully—and the first half hour is even better than that.
Mann opens with a thrilling montage that, spinning in and out of a nightclub performance by Sam Cooke , contextualizes the hero in his times", and concluded that, "Ali's astonishing personality is skillfully evoked but, in the end, remains a mystery".
When Ali died on June 3, , Smith was chosen to be one of Ali's pallbearers for the memorial service in Louisville. The film was released theatrically in at a length of minutes.
This version was released on DVD on April 30, Approximately 4 minutes of theatrical footage was removed, while 14 minutes of previously unseen footage was placed back in by Mann.
The theatrical cut of the film was released on Blu-ray in France in and in Germany in In Mann created a third cut, significantly re-editing the film in the aftermath of Ali's death.
He deleted one fight and added scenes and footage focusing on the political side of Ali's life. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theatrical release poster.

I get why it has a reputation for mostly disappointing people but I like that the movie defies convention both in narrative and style. In regards to Smith, he's best when playing Ali's charismatic and transgressive public persona while he falls flat in scenes that require more nuance.
