He embraced the music of Bob Dylan and his style of playing was rock and jazz-inflected. In the late s and the s, he also increasingly began working as a session musician to supplement his income.

The son of a singer at the Metropolitan Opera , Duffey's singing ranged from tenor to falsetto , and was in contrast to the voice of baritone singer Charlie Waller.

Duffey started playing guitar at age 17 after a neighbor convinced him to pick up the instrument. Appearing with fellow Seldom Scene member, dobro player and baritone vocalist Mike Auldridge , Duffey played mandolin and provided tenor vocals for two tracks on the Tony Rice album Tony Rice Plays and Sings Bluegrass.

Two months after his induction to the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor, Duffey was hospitalized in Arlington, Virginia after complaining of chest pains.

Police stepped up their search for the attacker. There was still no evidence at this time to suggest that two men were carrying out the attacks.

In the spring of , the two men attacked another helpless young victim. After being raped and strangled, the teenager's body was set on fire, most likely a grisly attempt to destroy any evidence.

Less than a month later, on May 12, , Duffy was arrested after he was found carrying a knife. However, there was not enough evidence to charge him and he was released — only to kill again six days later.

On May 18, the victim was local TV presenter Anne Locke, 29, who was abducted as she disembarked from her train in Hertfordshire. In October , a year-old schoolgirl miraculously managed to get away with her life after she was raped by both men.

After this attack, on October 21, Duffy's luck began to run out. While stalking a woman in a park on November 7, he was discovered and arrested.

The next day, Duffy was charged with three murders, and seven counts of rape. Mulcahy was also arrested, but later released due to lack of evidence.

It would be two years before Duffy would speak out and admit that he carried out the attacks with an accomplice.

Duffy went on trial in February and was convicted of two murders and four rapes, though he was acquitted of raping and killing Anne Locke.

He was given a minimum sentence of 30 years by the judge, later extended to a whole life sentence by the Home Secretary. This was rescinded by a European Court of Human Rights ruling, that later removed the right of politicians to reset sentence lengths.

Duffy kept silent about having an accomplice until he decided he wanted to clear his conscience while undertaking a counseling session.

He chose not to reveal any more information about his partner in crime until nearly 15 years later in when he implicated Mulcahy. The police had suspected Mulcahy for years but had no evidence on which to convict him until Duffy's confession.

Duffy also admitted his involvement in the attack on Anne Locke, although he couldn't be retried under the double jeopardy rule. However, Mulcahy, a married father of four, had been tracked for several months by police prior to his arrest.

DNA tests, which were not yet in use during the original investigation, finally proved his involvement conclusively.

In , Duffy appeared at in court as a witness against Mulcahy and gave detailed and graphic evidence over 14 days.

It was the first time a highest-category prisoner had ever given evidence against an accomplice.

Mulcahy emerged as the chief perpetrator of the crimes and the first to decide that sexual stimulation was no longer enough of a thrill, leading the pair to turn to murder.

He was said by a former employee at a cab firm he worked at to despise women. She said Mulcahy had once crept up behind her in the office.

Prosecutor Mark Dennis said in Mulcahy's trial, "As they fed their newfound predilections they treated their victims as objects rather than persons.

In the witness box, Duffy catalogued their heinous campaign of rape and murder, describing how the two friends would go out on "hunting parties" in the '80s searching for women.

Duffy used his knowledge of the rail network to target his victims and drag them into concealed areas where they could be attacked. We did it as a bit of a joke.

A bit of a game. Mulcahy protested his innocence, but on February 5, , was given three life sentences for murdering three women.

He also received year jail terms on each of seven counts of rape and 18 years each for five conspiracies to rape, to run concurrently.

Following the trial, much was made of the psychological profile constructed by Canter, as Duffy fitted 13 of the 17 observations he had predicted regarding the attacker's lifestyle and habits.

Such profiling became commonplace in policing thereafter. Following his conviction, Duffy revealed to a forensic psychologist what the police knew already: that he had not attacked the women alone.

However, he chose to reveal no more until , when he implicated Mulcahy, a lifelong friend from whom Duffy had been inseparable since their days together at school in Haverstock , North London.

Whilst in school they were once excluded after being found laughing and covered in blood, following their bludgeoning a hedgehog. Duffy also admitted his involvement in the attack on Anne Lock, although he could not be re-tried for this under the double jeopardy rule now abolished.

However, Mulcahy—a married father of four—could still be implicated, and following Duffy's claims he was tracked for several months by police prior to his arrest; DNA tests which were not yet in use during the original investigation also conclusively proved his involvement.

Duffy was convicted of 17 more rapes and received a further 12 years. Police suspect them of countless other sex attacks, some dating back to the mids, while Mulcahy is also suspected of attacks which took place after Duffy was jailed.
