A cat named Francis moves with his owner to a new neighborhood, and no sooner has he set paw into his new home than he is greeted by the slain body of another cat.
Local street cat Bluebeard is convinced that this, and the other three recent killings, must have been committed by a "can-opener", which is cat slang for a human.
Francis disagrees, and as he finds out more about the victims, he is sure that not only is the murderer a cat, but that the killings are all connected by one common factor - each of the victims was sexually aroused at the time of death.
He is aided in his investigations by fierce, gluttonous Bluebeard, blind but wise Felicity , and the elderly, technology-savvy cat Pascal.
His sleep is haunted by terrifying and vivid nightmares, which offer insight into the mind of the murderer. Francis soon runs afoul of the local bully Kong and the masochist Claudandus Sect and he discovers that his new home was once the site of a laboratory owned by Doctor Preterius.
Preterius, in his search to create a bonding glue that would heal any flesh wound, performed painful and deadly experiments on countless cats, including the legendary Claudandus.
This particular cat was the first upon which the bonding glue worked, something Preterius attributed to superior genetics.
He continued routine vivisection on Claudandus, and as his experiments continued to fall short of expectations, the doctor descended into alcoholic madness.
One day, the long-suffering Claudandus attacked Preterius, tearing open his throat. After Preterius's death, the abandoned lab became a meeting site for the Claudandus Sect, who believe that Claudandus was imbued with powers that could help the cat species evolve into something greater.
Some believe that Claudandus has ascended to another life, and that by sacrificing themselves through painful rituals, they may attain perfection.
It is eventually revealed that Claudandus lives on, having taken the new identity of Pascal, Francis' mentor. Through selective breeding, he aims to give rise to a 'new breed' of feline - one perfect enough to overtake the humans.
He calls his database and his plan simply, "Felidae". Having been impressed by Francis' intelligence, he hopes that the younger cat will continue the Felidae project after he dies.
Appalled by all the suffering Claudandus has caused in the name of "racial purity", Francis refuses and tries to delete Felidae. Enraged, Claudandus attacks him and accidentally destroys the computer, sparking an electrical fire.
The two cats fight, and Francis eventually disembowels Claudandus, who remarks as he dies that he, too, was once as pure as Francis. Francis is a very smart and cultured cat, very different from many other cats.
He's involved in many adventures, because of his uncontrollable curiosity and desire to solve cases of murder that affect the cats community.
Differently from many cats, Francis exhibits an exceptional intuit and intelligence that bring him to solve complicated cases to reveal the killer or killers.
One of his main features is that Francis doesn't hold back from personally facing the killer and has pointed how a true detective should ever have "sharp claws".

Francis is chased from the scene and meets a blind female cat named Felicity. She gives him more information, but after meeting a friend of Bluebeard's, Pascal an old cat who uses his owner's computer to list the cats in the neighborhood, which he intends to use to help find the killer.
The investigations are then influenced by a number of factors as the disappearance of Joker revealed to be killed by a still alive Claudandus on his own will , the discovery of Jesaja that show how the number of victims was larger and that kept taking care of the bodies for years and years, and the meeting with the beautiful she-cat Nhozemphtekh that was part of the breed selected by Claudandus himself.
He was one of the many cats tortured in the scientific laboratory of Dr. Preterius years ago, but he managed to escape, killing Preterius and freeing the other cats including Bluebeard and Felicity.
Then for years Claudandus had kept selecting and breeding the cats of the city to create the "Felidae", a "new and old" breed that resembles the ancient Egyptian cats: to make this it was of primary importance for him to prevent mating that could result in an alteration of the "Felidae".
Knowing he was close to die due to health, Claudandus had left clues to Francis such as letting him meet and mate with Nhozemphtekh, to make him fascinated by such a breed and finally asks Francis to follow his path and take his place as the one that directed the Felidae project.
Francis, realizing how the search of a racial purity had caused so much deaths and suffering, rather than accepting Claudandus's offer, proceeds to eliminate the program from the computer causing Claudandus's anger.
